Is there still life in the old cipher bones, then? :-)
MBC 29th September, 2007 09:30
Yes, there will be now, my name is Michael and I’m taking over Cipher. There are some new screenshots of the tings that I’m working on.

Hmm, interesting. Still sticking to C? That's why a lot of us purchased Cipher originally.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes, so far it all in C.

Hello Michael,
So will existing developers need to pay for upgrade? Also, are you going to finish stuff like the terrain engine?
And thanks for information. It's nice to see some life coming back into the engine.
Steve

Hi Steve,
All existing developers will get the updates for free,
but there maybe a small fee for the world editor,

Michael,
That sounds outstanding! I wouldn't mind paying, not saying that. I'm excited that someone has decided to move forward with Cipher.
Looking forward to it.

Hi Michael, good to meet you. So, tell us, is Rik Heywood no longer involved in Cipher at all?
Is this handover story something that you'd like to share with the rest of us? Why have you taken over it etc. Everyone likes a good yarn :-)

Hi,
To make the story short, I contacted Rik to hear what his plans is for cipher,
and there was none, he has moved on, and the time need to keep the engine up to date,
is something he do not have, so we talk some more and came to a agreement,
so Rik is no longer involved, I have take the helm, and I will do my best to give
you all a engine with new features, and new tools.
Michael.

this so so awesome. thanks for taking the project and continuing it.
do you plan to open cipher for tools beside 3ds max (maybe using collada or fbx) and MSVC++ (dev-cpp or codeblocks)? would be great.
sm3 5th October, 2007 16:38
I would put my vote in for the free MSVC 2005 Express compiler. I personally will not pay hundreds or thousdans of US dollars for a compiler.

I wish you would move the code to C++. Despite Steve's observation, I am one who quit using the engine because it was in C.

It's easy to encapsulate all the cipher( ) calls in a OOP fashion =)
You can use the engine as low level support

Looking forward to seeing more Michael! Cipher is still my favorite engine to work with!

I'm excited... I have been inactive in the game dev world for like 2 years now cuz I moved then got a gf but now I'm back and wanting to work on my project again and I was happy to see I will still be able to use cipher and not have to switch to a new engine with a new feature set. So once the updates come out I'm sure I'll be as active as ever in the community again. I hope my projectile code will still work in the new version lol.
Matt
